Drone inspection John Frost bridge
Rotterdam, Feb 2022
The John Frost Bridge is the road bridge over the Lower Rhine at Arnhem, in the Netherlands. The bridge is named after Major-General John Dutton Frost (1912–1993), who commanded the British forces that reached and defended the bridge during the Battle of Arnhem in September 1944. The bridge was featured in the 1977 film A Bridge Too Far.
To ensure safe usage and maintain this heritage for future generations a large maintenance project will be executed by Mobilis. The inspection of bridges is complex and can impact daily use and therefore DDC used remote sensors for the complete inspection to define the maintenance scope.
DDC used several types of drones to inspect all areas of the bridge including underneath the deck and pillars. All high-resolution photos have been processed into a 3D model and online tool by DDC to convert annotations into an inspection report.
This digital twin can be accessed remotely by the teams working on the project without the need to have people physically on location saving money and reducing the risk of people working on scaffolds.
